St Helena Bay, located on the West Coast of South Africa, is a tranquil and historic town known for its unique geographical features, rich marine life, and significant role in the country's fishing industry.
History and Geography
St Helena Bay was discovered by Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama in 1497, who was the first European to set foot on South African soil. He originally named it "Bahia de Santa Elena" after Saint Helena. What makes the bay's geography particularly unique is that it's one of the few places on the South African coast where the sun rises over the sea due to its north-facing orientation.
The bay itself is made up of 18 smaller bays, each with its own character. It stretches from Dwarskersbos in the north to Cape St Martin in the west and includes towns like Stompneusbaai and Britannia Bay. The area's landscape is characterized by imposing granite boulders and long, white sandy beaches.
Marine Life and Economy
The bay's waters are fed by the nutrient-rich Benguela Current, making it one of the world's prime fishing areas. This has made the town a major hub for South Africa's fishing industry, with several fish processing factories located in the area. The main harbor at Sandy Point is a busy place, with a constant flow of fishing vessels.
The abundance of marine life also makes it a popular destination for dolphin and whale watching. Endemic Heaviside's dolphins, as well as dusky and common dolphins, are frequent visitors. Southern right whales come to the calm waters of the bay to calve and mate during the second half of the year, making it an excellent spot for whale watching from the shore. Humpback and killer whales also visit the bay.
Things to Do
While fishing is central to the local economy, St Helena Bay is also a growing tourist destination, offering a mix of relaxation and outdoor activities.
Outdoor Activities: Visitors can enjoy activities like kayaking, bird watching (the bay is on a migratory route for many species), and exploring the beautiful beaches. The area is also part of the West Coast Way Foodie Route.
Attractions: A monument marks the historic landing site of Vasco da Gama. The nearby Shelley Point Peninsula is a popular attraction with a golf estate and a spa. The Cape Columbine Lighthouse is also a short drive away.
Wildflowers: Like many places on the West Coast, St Helena Bay is famous for its stunning display of wildflowers that bloom in the spring after a good winter rain season.
