Smart Holiday Security: 10 Ways to Keep Your Home Safe This Festive Season

Whether you’re heading to the coast, hosting out-of-town guests, or simply enjoying long, lazy days with friends, this time of year brings an opportunity for well-deserved rest. Unfortunately, it also tends to bring an uptick in opportunistic crime, especially in residential areas left temporarily unattended.

“Even if you’re not away for the entire holiday, the risk increases the more time you spend out of the house,” says Berry Everitt, CEO of the Chas Everitt International Property Group. “Protecting your home doesn’t need to be complicated, but it does require foresight.”

Start with the basics. Ask someone you trust to pop in regularly, or better yet, to stay over. Nothing beats a home that still looks and feels lived in. If that’s not possible, ask a neighbour to bring in your post and wheel your bins out on collection day. A little activity goes a long way in signalling that someone’s around.

It also helps to know your neighbours, and to be known by them. Many communities use WhatsApp groups to report anything unusual. Just a quick check-in with those nearby can establish a sense of shared watchfulness that makes everyone feel safer.

Take a walk around your home with security in mind. Make sure that alarm systems and beams are working, and double-check that you’ve got backup batteries in place for loadshedding. Inform your security company if you’ll be away, and test your panic buttons before you leave. Garages, sheds and laundry rooms are often overlooked, so be sure these are locked and secure, especially if they contain tools or ladders that could be used to gain entry.

A bit of garden maintenance also makes a difference. Overgrown shrubs and trees can provide cover or even access to upper storeys of the house. If you’re away for a week or more, arrange for someone to mow the lawn or clean the pool.

Lighting plays a very powerful role in security. Timers that switch lights on and off help create the illusion of normal household rhythms, while motion-triggered lights outside can help deter intruders. Avoid leaving lights on all day, as t’s a dead giveaway that no one’s home.

Be discreet with your rubbish. If you’re tossing out appliance or electronics boxes, fold them flat or keep them out of sight. You never know who’s paying attention.

And as tempting as it is to post your holiday in real time, try to resist until you’re home before sharing your favourite snaps – and avoid advertising expensive new items online, even if they were gifts.

Finally, have a plan in case the unexpected happens. Store emergency contacts on speed dial, keep panic buttons accessible, and make sure everyone in the home knows what to do in the event of a break-in.

Just a few thoughtful steps can help protect your peace of mind, and your property. That way, you can enjoy your downtime without worrying about what’s happening back home.
