Moving & settling into your new home: Save these tips to make it a smooth process

Congratulations on purchasing your new home! It's an exciting time, with lots to think about and plan for. Before you let the stress overwhelm you, we're here to help. We've compiled a list of expert tips and advice you can use to make the move with ease.

Before moving in
Do a thorough inspection and ask the right questions

• Check all the switches are working (lights, geysers, plug points) - even though the seller has to provide you with a valid compliance certificate.
• Ensure all your appliances fit (top-loader washing machines need a different space to front loaders).
• Find out if the appliances, air conditioners, and inverters have warranties (and ask for a copy).
• Take time to understand how everything works, such as the irrigation system, alarm, solar apps, generator / inverter, swimming pools, etc.
• Check if there are keys for all the doors, and if there are spare sets (marked preferably).
• Ask for the security codes for keypads, remotes, and safes.
• Find out if you need to install an alarm or security system, or if there is an existing alarm who you must contact to change the account and things like the safe words and panic buttons.

Learn more about the area and utilities

• Check if the home has access to or allows gas appliances/heaters etc. If there are fitted gas appliances or fires - make sure you have a copy of the compliance certificate.

• See where the bins are, what days collection happen, how many bins they have, and who is responsible for taking them out.

• Join any relevant local community WhatsApp groups - ask your agent or seller - these can be really useful.

• Get the name and number for the ward councillor in case you have queries/issues.

Get the admin in order

• Pre-book installation providers (dishwasher, washing machine, alarms etc.), especially if DIY is not your strength

• Get moving insurance in case anything goes wrong

Do the paperwork

• Open a new municipal account (such as a City of Joburg account) 

• Transfer and cancel old service providers, such as your internet provider

• Update your address with important contacts, such as your bank, insurer, employer, etc.

The day of moving
Logistics

• Ensure that you're moving in only once the seller has moved out. 

• Use a reputable moving company.

• Try moving mid-month. It's cheaper than moving at the end/beginning of the month.

• Move valuables yourself and make sure to have a space place to store them at the new home.

• Keep some cash handy on the day to tip the moving company and other suppliers.

Essentials

• Pack a bag of essential items for the first night (toothbrush, soap, change of clothing, etc.)

• Have a basic toolkit on hand (hammer, nails, tape measure, etc.) in case you need to install items/appliances on the day.
